University of Texas Southwestern Medical CenterAbout
Michael S. Brown is the Paul J. Thomas Professor of Molecular Genetics and Director of the Jonsson Center for Molecular Genetics at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Along with his long-time collaborator Joseph L. Goldstein, Brown has made groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of cholesterol metabolism and cardiovascular disease.
His research has focused on cholesterol homeostasis, lipoprotein receptors, and the molecular basis of familial hypercholesterolemia. Brown and Goldstein discovered the LDL receptor and elucidated the mechanism of receptor-mediated endocytosis, explaining how cells regulate cholesterol levels. Their work demonstrated that mutations in the LDL receptor cause familial hypercholesterolemia, a disorder leading to premature heart attacks.
Analysis of Brown's publications reveals a consistent focus on cholesterol metabolism and regulation. His work spans structural biology of sterol-sensing domains, transcriptional regulation of lipid synthesis, lysosomal cholesterol transport, and the molecular mechanisms underlying metabolic disorders. The research demonstrates an evolving but cohesive trajectory from fundamental discoveries about LDL receptors to more recent work on sterol regulation and metabolic pathways.
Brown's scientific achievements have been recognized with the Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology and the U.S. National Medal of Science, among other prestigious awards.
Notably, Brown and Goldstein have maintained one of the longest-running scientific collaborations in history, working together for over 40 years. Their partnership has been characterized by complementary approaches, rigorous science, and a focus on significant biological questions that yield substantial experimental effects.
