Michael Ridge is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh, affiliated with the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences. He received his PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1998) after completing an MA at Tufts University (1995) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1997). Prior to his current role, he held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Australian National University (1998–2000).
- Primary Research Areas: Meta-ethics, moral and political philosophy, action theory, philosophy of mind.
- Key Contributions: Development of Ecumenical Expressivism, work on moral particularism/generalism, and rule consequentialism.
Scientific Awards:
- Philip Leverhulme Prize for Research (2004–2006)
Current Research: Focuses on meta-ethics, meta-epistemology, and collaborative projects with Dr. Chrisman and Professor Pritchard. His recent projects include Why so serious? (Leverhulme Trust, 2022–2023) and Emerging Themes in 21st Century Metaethics (AHRC, 2012–2014).
PhD Supervision: Currently supervises James Brown, Patrick Denning, Matthew Hoffman, Giles Howdle, and John O'Connor.
