Michael Matter is a Research Fellow at the Department of Musicology, Faculty of Humanities, University of Basel. He was born in Bern in 1981 and studied musicology, history, and art history at the University of Bern and La Sapienza in Rome. He earned his doctorate from the University of Zurich in 2012 with a thesis on Niels W. Gade and the 'Nordic tone'—a precedent in music history. His career includes roles as a music critic, internships in publishing (Tübingen), opera dramaturgy (Biel), and cultural management (Freiburg im Br.), and ongoing work as a concert dramaturge and co-editor of the Swiss Musicological Society's editions.
