Michael Kharas

Michael G. Kharas, PhD, is a Cancer Biologist and Researcher at the Molecular Pharmacology Program within the Sloan Kettering Institute. His work bridges basic RNA biology and therapeutic development, focusing on hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and their dysregulation in leukemia. Dr. Kharas investigates RNA regulators, particularly the MUSASHI family, and their roles in cell fate decisions, differentiation, and tumorigenesis.

Research projects include characterizing RNA-binding proteins in leukemia, developing small molecules against these targets, and studying metabolic adaptations in cancer cells. His lab employs innovative screening strategies and collaborates globally to uncover novel therapeutic approaches. Notably, Dr. Kharas’s team has pioneered studies on m6A RNA methylation and its impact on leukemic differentiation.

Scientific awards include the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Career Development Award (2017), Alex Lemonade Stand Foundation ‘A’ Award (2016), and the American Society of Hematology Junior Faculty Scholar Award (2011). He mentors graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, including Briana Turner (WCMC Graduate Student) and Isaac Wakiro (GSK Student), among others.
