Michael Hamilton

Michael Hamilton is a Visiting Associate Professor at the University of East Anglia's School of Law, with extensive prior roles including Associate Professor of Public Protest Law (UEA, 2012–2022), Acting Chair of the Human Rights Program at the Central European University (2011–2012), and Co-Director of the Transitional Justice Institute at the University of Ulster (2008–2009). He serves as a Legal Advisor on protest rights for Amnesty International and is a member of the OSCE-ODIHR Panel of Experts on Freedom of Assembly. His work has influenced international guidelines, such as the OSCE-ODIHR–Venice Commission 'Guidelines on Freedom of Peaceful Assembly' (2007; 2010).

Michael holds an LLB from the University of Kent and an MA in Irish Studies from Queen’s University Belfast. His PhD focused on parade disputes in Northern Ireland, examining tensions between community relations and human rights approaches. He actively advises on parading issues through roles like the Northern Ireland Strategic Review (2007–2010) and the Short Life Working Group on Processions in Scotland. He also contributed to Police Scotland’s COP26 policing strategies as part of an independent advisory group.

His research interests center on legal protections and regulation of freedom of assembly, free speech jurisprudence in transitional democracies, and broader human rights law. He emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, such as his work with the Universities of St Andrews and Edinburgh analyzing protest policing at COP26. Michael’s work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to peace, justice, and strong institutions (Goal 16).

Recent research outputs reflect his engagement with cutting-edge topics like AI’s role in protest dynamics, digital assembly rights, and policy frameworks for peaceful gatherings. His advisory roles span international courts (e.g., Inter-American Court) and national governments, highlighting a commitment to bridging academic theory and practical policy.
