Michael Gibson

Michael Gibson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture at Kansas State University's College of Architecture, Planning and Design, where he has taught design studio, environmental systems, and research seminars since 2011. He is the faculty lead of the Net Positive Studio and a co-founder of the Better Housing Consortium, driving innovation in sustainable and affordable housing.

Research Interests: His work centers on sustainable architectural design, net zero energy homes, and the integration of innovative materials such as hemp into building systems. He emphasizes experiential learning through full-scale prototyping, computer simulation, and community partnerships. His research bridges academic inquiry with professional practice, focusing on energy efficiency, prefabrication, and the socioeconomic benefits of high-performance housing.

Advising, Grants, and Practice: As faculty lead of the Net Positive Studio, he mentors students in designing and constructing affordable net zero homes in collaboration with community partners, which have secured millions in grants and funding. He is a licensed architect in Kansas and Missouri, a LEED-accredited professional, and an active AIA member, having served as past president of AIA Topeka. In 2022, he launched Helia, a small sustainable design and furniture practice based in Topeka.

Research Initiatives and Teams: He co-founded the Better Housing Consortium in 2024 with colleagues from Landscape Architecture, Regional & Community Planning (LARCP) and Interior Architecture & Design (IAID), fostering interdisciplinary collaboration to advance resilient and equitable housing solutions in Kansas and beyond. The Net Positive Studio serves as a living lab for student engagement and applied research in sustainable building technologies.
