About
Michael Davies is a Lecturer in the Department of English and American Studies at Humboldt University of Berlin with over 25 years of teaching experience. He began his academic career at the university in October 1998, initially focusing exclusively on Translation Studies until 2009, and currently teaches across the Master of Education, Master of English Literatures, and Bachelor of Arts programs.
His academic journey began in Knowsley, Northwest England, where he completed his A-levels at Prescot Grammar School for Boys in 1981. He earned his BA in Modern Languages from the University of Bradford in 1985, followed by a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from the University of London Institute of Education in 1988, and a Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics/TESOL from the University of Surrey.
Davies' research focuses on the intercultural and pragmatic dimensions of language learning, with particular applications in Translation Studies and Teacher Training. His teaching philosophy integrates extensive professional translation experience—including work as a technical translator in France, media translator in Munich, and advertising copywriter in Hamburg—with academic linguistic theory to create practical, engaging learning experiences.
As an active member of the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL), Davies regularly participates in conferences to stay current with developments in language teaching methodology. His diverse course offerings span Written Expression, Pedagogic Grammar, Culture and Language Learning, and specialized Translation Skills across multiple degree programs.
Students can contact Davies via email to schedule consultation appointments during his regular Wednesday office hours (4:00-5:00 PM) in Room 0.07 at Dorotheenstraße 28, though prior email arrangement is required.
