Dr. Michael Baenitz is a Group Leader in the Physics of Quantum Materials department at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids (MPI CPfS) in Dresden, Germany. He leads the Magnetic Resonance and Optical Spectroscopy research group alongside Dr. Jörg Sichelschmidt.
His research focuses on investigating spin dynamics and electronic properties of quantum materials using advanced spectroscopic techniques. His group specializes in:
- Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron spin resonance spectroscopies
- Studies of quantum criticality in correlated electron systems
- Investigation of spin orbit entangled quantum magnets and metals
- Research on topological materials including Dirac and Weyl semimetals
Dr. Baenitz's experimental work spans a wide range of temperatures (2-300K, ESR up to 1000K) and magnetic fields up to 14 T. His group has recently established NMR under pressure (up to 2 GPa) and collaborates with other institutions for ultra-low temperature measurements and high magnetic field experiments.
His group is currently supervising several PhD projects including research on non-oxy delafossites, pressure-tuning of topological materials, and exploring bulk Dirac- and Weyl-fermion magnetism.
Dr. Baenitz has been with the Max Planck Institute since 1998, after completing his doctoral degree at the Free University of Berlin in 1995.
