Michael A. Joseph

Michael A. Joseph, PhD, MPH serves as Vice Dean of the School of Public Health at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University and tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, with an adjunct appointment in Health Management and Policy at the University of Michigan School of Public Health.

His academic credentials include a PhD in Epidemiologic Science from the University of Michigan (2002), MPH in Chronic Disease Epidemiology from Yale University (1996), and BS in Health Science from Brooklyn College (1994).

Dr. Joseph's research addresses critical health disparities through four interconnected domains: HIV/AIDS transmission dynamics in Black communities, cancer epidemiology intersecting with social determinants, international public health capacity building in resource-limited settings, and innovative pipeline development for students of color entering health professions. His work emphasizes community-engaged approaches to reduce health inequities.

He has earned the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching (2013) for his nationally recognized pedagogical contributions.

Dr. Joseph actively mentors through multiple pipeline initiatives including the University of Michigan's Summer Enrichment Program and Future Public Health Leaders Program, Morehouse College's Project IMHOTEP and Public Health Leader Fellowship, and SUNY Downstate's Health Science Academy at the Arthur Ashe Institute. His federally funded research examines heterosexual Black men's HIV transmission risks, complementing his international training work in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Estonia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan.
