Mia Brantley is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at North Carolina State University, affiliated with the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and the Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies interdisciplinary program. Her work focuses on the intersection of race, gender, and family dynamics within health contexts, employing both qualitative and quantitative methods.
Brantley holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of South Carolina (2021), an M.A. in Sociology from the same institution (2017), and a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (2014). Her research explores how race shapes health outcomes for Black families, particularly examining race-related stress transmission and Black maternal well-being.
Her recent scholarship addresses topics such as remote schooling impacts during the pandemic, intergenerational caregiving in Black families, and the application of Black feminist theory to maternal health. She has published widely on racial disparities in mental health, family dynamics, and the intersection of religion and family conflict.
Brantley's current research agenda emphasizes understanding how systemic racism affects Black family structures and maternal experiences. She contributes to interdisciplinary conversations through affiliations with Women's Studies and collaborative projects addressing health equity.
