About
Meredith Barr is a Lecturer in Chemical & Energy Engineering at London South Bank University (LSBU), where she joined in 2023. Previously, she was a Postdoctoral Researcher (PDRA) in Polymer and Composite Engineering at Imperial College London (2021–2023). She holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Queen Mary University of London (2018–2022) and a BSc in Chemical-Biological Engineering from MIT (2014–2018).
Research Interests: Dr. Barr specializes in sustainable materials and waste-negative parallel manufacturing, focusing on converting biomass waste into value-added materials. Her work emphasizes environmental sustainability, including biochar-based water filtration to combat antimicrobial resistance, ionic liquid processing of biomass, and circular economy principles. She coordinates the Environmental Biotechnology Network’s Biochars for Pollution Prevention Working Group, fostering collaboration in biochar-related environmental remediation technologies.
Teaching: She teaches courses such as Kinetics and Reaction Engineering, Advanced Reaction Engineering, and Process Safety and Environmental Management. As Engineering Lead for Student Mobility, she supports international academic collaborations.
Grants and Impact: Her research aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly clean water and climate action. Key projects include developing biochar wastewater filters, lignin-based photoprotective materials, and data pipelines for biochar surface optimization using X-ray tomography.
