About
Dr. Mei Wang serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin with a joint appointment in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. She directs the Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory (OBL) within the Orthopaedic & Rehabilitation Engineering Center (OREC), where she conducts biomechanical research spanning multiple anatomical regions including the spine, shoulder, elbow, knee, foot, and ankle.
Dr. Wang earned her M.Sc. in 1991 and Ph.D. in 1996, both in Mechanical Engineering from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Her academic trajectory from mechanical engineering to orthopaedic biomechanics provides a unique interdisciplinary foundation that bridges engineering principles with clinical orthopaedic applications. This background enables her to approach clinical problems with rigorous engineering methodologies.
Her primary research focuses on spine biomechanics and the mechanical causes of low back pain and sacroiliac dysfunction, along with the biomechanics of orthopaedic injuries and fracture fixations. Dr. Wang's work frequently employs cadaveric models, biomechanical testing, and in vitro evaluations to assess orthopaedic interventions and conditions. Her research methodology emphasizes quantitative analysis of joint mechanics, surgical techniques, and rehabilitation approaches, with particular attention to evidence-based validation of clinical procedures.
Analysis of Dr. Wang's publication history reveals consistent scholarly output with a clear evolution toward increasingly complex biomechanical investigations. Her recent work demonstrates a strong emphasis on comparative studies of surgical techniques, particularly in shoulder arthroplasty, tendon repair, and fracture fixation. The research spans from basic mechanical characterization of tissues and implants to clinically relevant cadaveric studies that directly inform surgical practice. Notably, her work often involves collaborative teams including clinicians, engineers, and researchers across multiple institutions.
As Director of the Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory, Dr. Wang oversees a research environment that bridges engineering and clinical orthopaedics. The laboratory serves as a critical resource for biomechanical testing and evaluation of orthopaedic devices and procedures, supporting both basic science and translational research. Her leadership has established the OBL as a center for rigorous biomechanical investigation that directly contributes to advancing orthopaedic care through evidence-based practice.
