Michael R. Baumgaertner

Michael R. Baumgaertner, MD is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery & Rehabilitation at Yale School of Medicine and serves as Chief of the Orthopaedic Trauma Service at Yale-New Haven Hospital. With over 25 years of clinical practice, he specializes in treating severe fractures, fracture complications, and worn-out joints across the entire musculoskeletal system (excluding spine).

Dr. Baumgaertner's research focuses on orthopaedic trauma, particularly hip fracture fixation techniques. His landmark 1995 publication established the tip-apex distance measurement as the universal standard for hip fracture surgery. His scholarly work spans fracture care optimization, trauma surgery innovations, and biomechanical approaches to orthopaedic problems.

His single documented publication demonstrates expertise in hip fracture fixation techniques. The research established critical surgical measurements that have become the global standard in orthopaedic trauma care, reflecting his focus on practical, clinically applicable solutions to complex fracture problems.

Dr. Baumgaertner has held significant leadership positions including President of AO North America and currently serves as Chair of the AO Trauma International Board.
