Dr. Maya Feile Tomes is a Lorna Close Lecturer in Spanish at Murray Edwards College, Cambridge, and an Affiliated Lecturer in the Faculty of Classics. She is also a Bye-Fellow in Modern Languages at Peterhouse. Her research focuses on early modern Iberian global literature, classical reception, and translation studies, with a particular interest in transatlantic dialogues and multilingual dynamics.

- Awards: Shortlisted for the Sundial Literary Translation Award (2024), twice longlisted for the John Dryden Literary Translation Prize (2019, 2023), and winner of the AHGBI & Spanish Embassy Dissertation Publication Prize and the Hare Prize in Classics.

Her work interrogates the intersections of classical antiquity and colonial Latin American literature, emphasizing multilingualism and transhemispheric cultural exchange. She has co-edited Sepúlveda on the Spanish Invasion of the Americas (OUP, 2023) and Brill’s Companion to Classics in the Early Americas (2021).
Translation Practice:
A prize-recognized translator, she bridges academic and literary texts between Spanish, Portuguese, and English. Her translations include works on AI in Chilean science fiction and colonial narratives in Peruvian and Argentine scholarship.
