Mauricio A. Castillo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies at Coastal Carolina University (CCU), specializing in Spanish and Latin American studies. Previously, he taught at Rutgers University, Camden; Sarah Lawrence College; Barnard College; and Columbia University. He holds a Ph.D., MPhil, and MA from Columbia University (2014), and a BA from the University of Arizona (Tucson).
His research focuses on avant-garde movements, 20th-century Latin American literature, visual culture, and intellectual history. His current book project examines socialist utopias in Latin American avant-garde works (1919–1939), analyzing muralism, periodicals, poetry, and theater through global and local geopolitical lenses. He explores themes like print media, intellectual roles, public art, and the intersection of politics and aesthetics.
Dr. Castillo is actively engaged in digital humanities, having participated in the Digital Humanities Summer Institute (2016) and earned a Digital Teaching Fellowship (2016). His teaching spans Spanish language, transdisciplinary courses, and second-language writing.
