Matthieu H. van der Meer is an Associate Teaching Professor of Classics at Syracuse University, affiliated with the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics. He holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Groningen (2006) and additional degrees in Theology and Philosophy from Dutch institutions. His research focuses on medieval authors' reinterpretation of authoritative texts, particularly in early medieval monastic contexts. Key projects include editing an 8th-century pastoral florilegium related to the Liber Scintillarum and co-editing monastic rules from pre-Benedictine eras.
His teaching spans Latin and Ancient Greek language courses, as well as seminars on medieval mysticism and monasticism. Recent publications address Carolingian monastic reforms, the role of the Bible in Nicholas of Cusa's philosophy, and the digital Hildemar Project translating Hildemar of Corbie's commentary on the Rule of Benedict. He has received the 2020 Outstanding Research Award from his department and serves on university committees, including the University Senate and LLL Advisory Board.
Research interests include monastic florilegia, Carolingian intellectual history, and the transmission of patristic texts. His collaborative work on the Hildemar Project aims to make medieval monastic scholarship more accessible through digital editions and translations.
