Technical University of MunichAbout
Prof. Dr. Matthias J. Feige is an Assistant Professor of Cellular Protein Biochemistry at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), affiliated with the TUM School of Natural Sciences and the Department of Chemistry/Institute for Advanced Study. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms governing protein quality control in human immune and nervous systems, with translational applications in biomedicine and biotechnology. He holds an ERC Consolidator Grant (2022) and has pioneered studies on cytokine secretion and membrane protein regulation.
Education: PhD in Biochemistry from TUM (2009) and postdoctoral training at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Tenure Track appointment at TUM since 2014.
Research interests integrate biochemistry, cell biology, and biophysics to address fundamental questions like: How do cells ensure proper protein folding? How are misfolded proteins degraded? His lab explores these mechanisms in medically relevant contexts, such as cytokine function and immune system regulation.
- Key awards: ERC Consolidator Grant (2022), German Bioregions Innovation Prize (2019)
Guides interdisciplinary teams and collaborates internationally. Research outputs emphasize translational potential, bridging basic science and clinical/biotechnological applications.
