Prof. Dr. Matthias Dreyer is a Professor of Theatre in Schools at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Rostock since 2018, leading the Teacher Training Program in Theatre (Performing Arts). Previously, he was a Humboldt Research Fellow at the University of Chicago (2017–2018) and worked at the Goethe University Frankfurt’s Institute for Theatre, Film, and Media Studies (2012–2017). He also contributed to the DFG-funded SFB “Transformationen der Antike” at the Free University Berlin (2005–2011). Educated in Vienna, Berlin, Paris, and Baltimore, he holds a PhD titled Theatre of the Break: Ancient Tragedy in Theatre since the 1960s.
His research focuses on contemporary theatre aesthetics, chorus forms, and pedagogical roles of theatre. He advises interdisciplinary dramaturgical collaborations and has served as dramaturg for institutions like the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg and Nationaltheater Mannheim. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Bundesverband Theater in Schulen (BVTS) and a Trustee Lecturer at Evangelischen Studienwerk Villigst.
