Matthew Watkins is a Lecturer in Healthcare and Family Law at Bournemouth University, specializing in health law, bioethics, and mental capacity legislation. He completed his PhD on medical decision-making and informed consent in 2022, which is being developed into a monograph scheduled for 2025 publication. His research examines devolved health policy, participation in mental capacity law, and the socio-legal impact of medical consent frameworks.
Teaching responsibilities include core LLB subjects (Tort Law, Criminal Law) and specialized modules in Family Law, Healthcare Law, and Legal Research Projects. He currently leads Level 6 Family Law and LLM Criminal Law modules. As Fellow of the Higher Education Authority, he develops pedagogical resources including health ethics curricula for Welsh schools.
Supervises PhD candidate Joseph McMullen on particulate matter regulation research. Chairs the BU Law Research Network and leads mooting teams that achieved success in international competitions.
