Matthew Sakakeeny

Matthew Sakakeeny is an Assistant Professor of Music at Tulane University, specializing in ethnomusicology. His work focuses on brass band musicians in New Orleans, as detailed in his book Roll With It: Brass Bands in the Streets of New Orleans. He has published in journals such as Ethnomusicology, Black Music Research Journal, and Contemporary Political Theory, and contributed to media outlets including NPR’s All Things Considered and WWOZ’s Street Talk.

His research interests include the intersection of music, culture, and urban life, particularly in marginalized communities. He actively engages with New Orleans’ music scene through volunteer work with the Roots of Music afterschool program and serves on the board of the Dinerral Shavers Educational Fund.
