Matthew Ruiz is a Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Kinesiology at Lipscomb University's College of Health Sciences. He joined Lipscomb in 2015 as an Associate Professor and was promoted to full Professor with tenure in 2019. Previously, he served as a tenured faculty member and Department Chair at Huntington University (Indiana), where he was named 2015 Professor of the Year. His administrative roles include Director of Graduate Studies in Exercise & Nutrition Science and Presidential Faculty Fellow (2019-2020).
Dr. Ruiz holds a Ph.D. in Kinesiology (Sport Psychology) from the University of Minnesota, an M.S. in Exercise Science & Sport Studies from Springfield College, an M.B.A. in Leadership from Lipscomb University, and a B.S. in Athletic Training and Exercise Science from Lipscomb University.
His research focuses on positive psychology and physical activity performance, Christianity and sport, and applied sport psychology. He has presented at global conferences such as the Global Congress on Sport & Christianity (UK) and the American Psychological Association Convention. His work bridges psychological principles with athletic performance, including studies on anxiety management, leadership, and injury rehabilitation.
Ruiz is an ICF-certified Performance Coach (2021) and serves in leadership roles for organizations like the Christian Society of Kinesiology, Leisure & Sport Studies (CSKLS), where he has held positions as Treasurer, President, and Board Member. His contributions include over 15 peer-reviewed articles in journals like the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research and the Journal of the Christian Society for Kinesiology, Leisure, & Sport Studies.
He actively engages in community outreach through sport psychology consultations for athletes, coaches, and organizations, addressing topics like stress management, team cohesion, and peak performance strategies.
