Matthew Powell is a Teaching Fellow in the School of Strategy, Marketing and Innovation at the University of Portsmouth's Faculty of Business & Law. He previously held teaching roles at the University of Birmingham (2014–2015) and completed his PhD at the University of Birmingham, focusing on tactical air power in WWII. His research explores air power’s role in military strategy, historical procurement decisions, and civil-military relations. Powell holds a BA and MA from the University of Salford in military history and intelligence studies. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) through academic and public engagement.

- Strategic use of air power in land warfare
- Military procurement and policy analysis
Awards: He received the Research Dissemination Prize in 2021. His media contributions span TV, radio, and print interviews on air power history and modern military conflicts.
Activities & Grants: Powell has delivered invited talks at institutions like Bishop Grosseteste University and the MoD. His recent projects include analyzing NATO capabilities and Ukrainian intelligence-sharing impacts. He advises doctoral students on air power topics.
