About
Dr. Matthew Lynes serves as Faculty Scientist I at the MaineHealth Institute for Research (MHIR) and Graduate Faculty member at the University of Maine, where he has led research on metabolism, obesity, and cardiovascular disease since becoming a Principal Investigator in 2021.
His academic background includes a B.A. in Biology from Colby College, a Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology from Boston University, and postdoctoral training at the Joslin Diabetes Center focusing on brown adipose tissue.
Dr. Lynes' research integrates cellular and molecular approaches to investigate metabolic disorders, with particular emphasis on adipose tissue physiology and its implications for obesity-related cardiovascular conditions. His laboratory employs advanced techniques in molecular biology to dissect disease mechanisms.
His scientific contributions have been recognized through prestigious awards:
- F32 Ruth L. Kirschstein Postdoctoral Individual National Research Service Award
- K01 Research Scientist Development Award from the NIDDK
Currently leading a COBRE grant project at MHIR, Dr. Lynes directs laboratory operations while mentoring trainees through the University of Maine's graduate program. His ongoing research focuses on translational applications of metabolic findings to develop therapeutic interventions for obesity-related cardiovascular pathologies.
