His research focuses on integrating mystical theology with Catholic systematic theology, particularly exploring the works of Adrienne von Speyr and Hans Urs von Balthasar. He has authored or co-edited numerous books, including Heaven Opens: The Trinitarian Mysticism of Adrienne von Speyr (2014) and Handing on the Faith (2014). His recent work examines Trinitarian theology, the theology of Holy Saturday, and inter-disciplinary dialogues on suffering.
Dr. Sutton teaches courses such as The Mystery of the Triune God, Christian Spirituality and Mysticism, and Ecclesiology. His scholarship emphasizes theological aesthetics, the relationship between mysticism and systematic theology, and the interdisciplinary study of suffering. He has presented at international conferences including the University of St. Andrews and Oxford University. His upcoming book, God Alone: A Theology of Compassion, explores von Balthasar’s theology in dialogue with postmodern thought.
Notably absent from his profile are formal student advisement records or grants explicitly listed, though his academic leadership in theology and residency programs at St. John’s reflects his commitment to student engagement. His work bridges theological scholarship with pastoral and philosophical inquiry, contributing to contemporary debates in Catholic theology.
