Christopher D. Denny is a Professor of Theology and Religious Studies at St. John's University, New York, within the St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. from The Catholic University of America (2004), an M.A. in Religion and Culture (1998), and a B.A. in Philosophy and Classics from St. John’s College (1993). His research focuses on Christian theology’s intersections with medieval and modern literatures, comparative theology, and cross-cultural understandings of sacrifice and hermeneutics.
Professor Denny has authored A Generous Symphony: Hans Urs von Balthasar's Literary Revelations (2016) and co-edited several volumes, including A Realist's Church (2015) and Empowering the People of God (2014). His articles span journals like Horizons, Journal of Interreligious Studies, and Open Theology, addressing themes like eco-theology, medieval mysticism, and interreligious dialogue. He has received best-article awards from the College Theology Society, the Catholic Press Association, and the Conference on Christianity and Literature.
He serves as President of St. John’s University Faculty Association (since 2020) and has held editorial roles, including Associate Editor of Horizons. His teaching spans courses on medieval theology, church history, and interreligious studies. Recent work includes explorations of Anselm’s social justice soteriology and eco-theological praxis rooted in interreligious sacrifice.
