Dr Matthew Howell is a Lecturer in Criminology and Sociology at Swansea University's School of Social Sciences. He is the programme director for the BSc Criminology and Sociology degree. With a decade of experience as a youth worker in Swansea and Cardiff, his research focuses on youth culture and institutional dynamics, particularly using ethnography to study youth homelessness. He teaches modules on housing policy, sociology, and research methods. Current research explores cultural perspectives on safety in homeless youth hostels. He supervises PhD students examining the impact of residential provisions on care-experienced children in South Wales.
