Matthew Cawvey is an Associate Professor and Department Chair of History and Political Science at Erskine College. He holds a B.S. from Olivet Nazarene University and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Illinois. His research focuses on public opinion dynamics, political psychology, and governance challenges in international contexts. He has taught courses such as American Government, U.S. Presidency, and Christian Political Thought, emphasizing ethical engagement with political systems.
Dr. Cawvey’s research explores themes like corruption perceptions in Latin America, psychological influences on political behavior, and governance barriers to renewable energy development. Before joining Erskine, he taught at Oklahoma State University and conducted public opinion research at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
His work integrates faith-based perspectives with academic rigor, reflecting Erskine’s mission as a Christian liberal arts institution. He has published in journals like Journal of Politics in Latin America and International Review of Victimology, with a focus on interdisciplinary approaches to political science.
