Matthew Berry

Dr. Matthew Berry is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE), within the Faculty of Arts. His research focuses on the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying acting, narrative, and the dissemination of scientific information. He holds a B.Sc. from the University of Ottawa (2014), a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from McMaster University (2021), and a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Cognitive Neuroscience at McMaster (2023).

Dr. Berry’s work spans two key areas: the science of performance (studying acting and creativity) and the performance of science (analyzing scientific communication). His lab, the Cognitive Research in Acting and Narrative (CRANBerry Lab), explores topics like facial expression dynamics in actors, embodied cognition in performance, and statistical methodologies in psychology. He teaches courses in statistical methods and research design at CUE and has collaborated internationally on projects in music cognition and narrative psychology.

Publications highlight his interdisciplinary approach, including peer-reviewed articles on actor behavior, storytelling mechanisms, and emotion processing. He is also co-author of open-source textbooks on data analysis in psychology and neuroscience. Dr. Berry actively mentors students in research projects and collaborates with colleagues globally to advance empirical studies in performance and cognition.
