Matthew Baxter is a Research Fellow in Design at the University of Leeds' School of Design, part of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures. He holds a PhD in Information Design (2022) and an MA in Graphic and Communication Design (2018), both from the University of Leeds, alongside a BSc in Zoology from the University of Sheffield. His work bridges academic research, teaching, and practical graphic design.
Research Interests: Focused on improving health information design through user-centered methodologies. Key areas include enhancing public health communication (e.g., surgery preparation materials, medication instructions) using iterative design processes. Techniques employed include eye-tracking, A/B testing, co-design, and heuristic evaluation.
Current Projects:
- Co-Investigator (2022–23): RecoverTogether – Mixed-method feasibility study for co-produced education interventions post-bowel cancer surgery (funded by NHIR).
- Co-Investigator (2022–23): Co-designing an information/exercise leaflet for people with polymyalgia rheumatica (funded by PMRGCAuk).
Teaching & Supervision: Supervises MA Design students specializing in information and user-centered design. Teaches an undergraduate Information Design module for Graphic Design and Art & Design students.
