Joanna Rucklidge

Joanna Rucklidge is a part-time Senior Lecturer in Visual Communication at Sheffield Hallam University, affiliated with the Art Design and Media Research Centre and Culture and Creativity Research Institute. She teaches on BA Illustration and Graphic Design programs. With over 20 years in art & design education, her work bridges pedagogy and environmental advocacy, focusing on waste materials, consumer habits, and sustainable practices. Her art employs prints, sculpture, and installations using reclaimed materials to critique ecological issues.

Education: BA Graphic Design (Glasgow School of Art), MA Visual Communication (Royal College of Art). Research interests include eco-pedagogy, material sustainability, and collaborative art practices. She co-authored a chapter in Design Education in the Anthropocene (Routledge, 2024) and has exhibited widely, including Ego to Eco (2020) and Shed-Collect-Shed (2014).

Her presentations explore nature connection pedagogy, such as at the 11th Illustration Research Symposium (2021) and Leeds Arts University Symposium (2018). Collaborations include Blowing Our Own Trumpets (2022 feminist digital archive) and Like-Letters (2015 blog-project).

Key themes in her work: transforming waste into art, community engagement in sustainability, and interdisciplinary approaches to environmental education. Current projects address eco-centric design and Anthropocene challenges.
