Matteo Gerli

Matteo Gerli is a Researcher (RTD-B) at the Department of International Human and Social Sciences of the University for Foreigners of Perugia, specializing in Sociology of Cultural and Communicative Processes (SPS/08). He holds a PhD in Political Theory and Research (2016) from the University of Perugia and a Master's in Data Science (2017) from the University of Rome Tor Vergata.

His educational background includes significant research experience, having participated in the European research project ANTICORRP (2016-2017) at the University of Perugia, followed by research fellowships at the University for Foreigners of Perugia (2017-2019) and the University of Bologna (2020-2021).

Gerli's research focuses on the sociology of communication and media, and the sociology of science and knowledge. His investigations analyze the production and circulation of knowledge and symbolic-cultural goods, with particular attention to traditional and digital media. He has extensively studied journalism's role in public debates on controversial issues such as immigration and political corruption, examining narrative devices (frames) of news stories and their thematic composition. His work also explores the regionalization of social sciences, particularly the role of EU-sponsored research projects in coordinating scientific activities at the European level.

His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on theoretical frameworks in journalism studies, European research policy, and media analysis of social controversies. Gerli applies statistical-computational methods (distant reading) to investigate intellectual production using large digital databases, bridging qualitative sociological approaches with quantitative data science techniques.
