Matteo Aureli

Matteo Aureli is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), within the College of Engineering. His research focuses on smart materials, multiphysics modeling, fluid-structure interactions, and nonlinear vibrations. He leads projects involving ionic polymer-metal composites (IPMCs), shape-morphing structures, and underwater robotics.

Dr. Aureli’s work integrates experimental and theoretical approaches to explore hydrodynamic forces, vibration control, and sensor technologies. Notable contributions include developing IPMC-based sensors for wearable applications and optimizing cantilever dynamics in viscous fluids. He has secured funding through NSF’s CAREER program for bioinspired robotic fin research.

His experimental studies often involve advanced techniques like lattice Boltzmann simulations, contact resonance atomic force microscopy, and field observations of fluid flows. Research themes include turbulence modification, cavitation in pumps, and additive manufacturing of soft materials.
