Matt Stokes serves as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Randolph College, joining the institution for the 2023-24 academic year. A native of Arizona, he completed all his formal education at Arizona State University, earning his PhD in Mathematics in 2023.
His research focuses on Number Theory, particularly Iwasawa Theory and p-adic Numbers, inspired by coursework under advisor Nancy Childress. Stokes emphasizes an interactive teaching philosophy where he "likes to ask a lot of questions" and ensures students feel comfortable with confusion as part of the learning process. He was drawn to Randolph by its close-knit academic community and opportunities for meaningful student-professor interaction.
Outside academia, Stokes maintains active hobbies including hiking, camping, walking, and drumming, while identifying research as his primary passion.
