María Datel is the Coordinator of the Spanish Language Program and a Senior Lecturer in Spanish at Boston University. She holds a Licenciatura in Literature from the Universidad de Buenos Aires, focusing on Argentine and Latin American literature. Prior to her role at BU, she taught Semiotics, Latin American Literature, and Spanish Grammar in Argentina and developed curricula for schools like the Kinsley Montessori School. At BU, she created courses such as “Contar el Crimen” (Crime Writing) and “Sailing with Darwin to the Patagonia and Beyond,” and currently coordinates LS212 and teaches LS309 “La Frontera/The Border.”
Her pedagogical focus centers on inclusive education, integrating underrepresented topics to foster classroom climates of tolerance and respect. She contributed to BU’s Hispanic Voices Project, teaching Spanish to disadvantaged communities to bridge university-community gaps.
María has held roles at Simmons College and has extensive experience in radio, literary journalism, and literacy campaigns in Paraguay. Her work emphasizes cultural representation and accessible education.
