Professor Martin W Lau is a Professor of South Asian Law and UG Year Abroad Programmes Convenor at SOAS University of London’s School of Law, Gender and Media. He holds MA and PhD qualifications from London. His research focuses on South Asian legal systems, Islamic law, human rights, environmental justice, and international commercial arbitration. Lau has supervised six PhD students exploring topics like women’s rights in Afghanistan, arbitration frameworks in UAE and Kenya, and climate law in Bangladesh.
His academic work spans over three decades, with publications in the Yearbook of Islamic and Middle Eastern Law, exploring themes such as legal reconstruction in Afghanistan, Pakistan’s Hudood Ordinances, and environmental tribunals. He contributes to global debates on constitutional frameworks in post-conflict states and the role of Islamic law in modern governance. Lau is affiliated with SOAS’s environmental justice programs, including the NLUD-SOAS Joint LLM/MA.
His advising includes projects on insolvency resolution in Islamic finance and Kenyan arbitration trends. Lau’s work bridges legal theory and practice, emphasizing marginalized communities’ access to justice in South Asia and the Middle East.
