Dr. Martin King is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, within the Faculty of Philosophy, Science Theory, and Religious Studies and the Department of Science Theory. His current research project, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), is titled "Deep Learning in Particle Physics: A Philosophical Analysis", examining the epistemological implications of artificial intelligence and data analysis in searches for new physics. He began this role at the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy (MCMP) in October 2022.
Previously, he conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Bonn and the University of Wuppertal as part of the DFG Research Unit "The Epistemology of the LHC", studying how models in particle physics evolve in response to LHC data, particularly following the Higgs discovery and the lack of new physics findings. He is also a member of the Lichtenberg Group for the History and Philosophy of Physics at the University of Bonn.
His research interests focus on the philosophy of artificial intelligence, philosophy of science, and philosophy of physics, with an emphasis on epistemological challenges in data-driven scientific methodologies. His doctoral work addressed explanation in physics, developing a model-based account of deductivist explanation.
King’s work bridges theoretical philosophy with practical applications in particle physics, analyzing shifts in scientific methodology and the role of deep learning in interpreting large datasets. His research outputs and further details can be found on his personal website (philphys.com) and the Epistemology of the LHC project site (lhc-epistemologie.uni-wuppertal.de).
