About
Mark Simpson is a Professor in the Department of English & Film Studies at the University of Alberta. He holds a PhD from Duke University and MA/BA degrees from the University of Alberta. His research focuses on energy humanities, cultural studies, mobility theory, and US literature/culture. He has led major projects including the Energy Humanities theme in Future Energy Systems (2017–2024) and co-founded the international After Oil collective and the Petrocultures Research Group.
Teaching includes courses on American literature, print culture, class/ideology, and cultural studies. Recent courses: ENGL 150 (Introduction to English Studies), ENGL 221 (Reading Class and Ideology), ENGL 357 (Topics in American Studies), and ENGL 583 (Cultural Studies).
Research explores intersections between energy systems, material culture, and cultural narratives. Notable works include Energy Emergency Repair Kit (2024) and Plastic in the Time of Impasse (2023). He collaborates globally on energy transitions and post-petroleum futures.
Professional service includes grants coordination and leadership in interdisciplinary research networks. Personal interests include cycling and music with his band.
