
About
Mark Shipley is the Undergraduate Programme Lead and Deputy Head of the School of Medicine at the University of Sunderland. He graduated with an MBBS with Distinction from Newcastle University in 2003 and completed postgraduate qualifications in Respiratory Medicine (MRCP), Palliative Medicine (PgDip), and Medical Education (PgCert). His career spans clinical practice as a Respiratory Consultant and leadership in medical education, including roles as Foundation Programme Director and Year 3/4 Lead for the University of Sunderland Medical Degree program.
His research and educational interests focus on implementing clinical guidelines to drive behavior change, curriculum design, and the application of artificial intelligence to undergraduate medical education. He also specializes in complex pleural disease, COPD, and non-malignant lung disease palliation, having established a pleural disease service and chaired regional COPD guideline groups.
Mark actively contributes to academic leadership as Chair of Health and Conduct and through collaborations with South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. Outside academia, he enjoys running, woodworking, and spending time with his golden retriever.
