Mark Rimmer

Mark Rimmer is an Associate Professor in Media Studies at the University of East Anglia, affiliated with the School of Art, Media and American Studies and the School of Film, Television and Media. He joined UEA in 2009 as a Lecturer and currently serves as Course Director for the BA Media Studies and Ethics Officer for the School.

His research focuses on media audiences, popular music, community and participatory arts, and cultural sociology. He explores music listening and experience through a trans-actional sociological lens, integrating pragmatist philosophy to understand media engagement. His work addresses community music, cultural policy, and the sustainability of arts organizations, particularly under austerity conditions.

The recent publications highlight a strong trend in relational and philosophical approaches to music and media sociology, with increasing emphasis on trans-actional theory, audience agency, and the social value of cultural participation. His research is deeply interdisciplinary, bridging media studies, sociology, and musicology.

Mark Rimmer has secured significant research funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) for projects such as 'Understanding the cultural value of In Harmony-Sistema England' and 'What ever happened to community music?'. He supervises research students in media consumption, audience studies, and community arts, and is actively involved in academic service as a journal reviewer and editorial board member of the International Journal of Community Music.

He is involved in academic networks and collaborative research, particularly in community-based media and music initiatives. His work often engages with policy stakeholders and community organizations, emphasizing applied and participatory research methodologies.
