- Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) from the University of Michigan (1990), specializing in solid state device and circuit design
- Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Grand Valley State University (2005)
Professor Michmerhuizen's expertise spans Electrical Engineering with focus on Embedded Systems and Automotive Electronics. His industry contributions include designing Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) for aerospace applications, developing automotive trip computers, and engineering the first Bluetooth-based hands-free telephone system launched in the 2003 Chrysler Pacifica. He has also advanced Infotainment systems and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solutions.
His professional journey encompasses key roles at Smiths Industries (now General Electric Aviation), Prince Corporation (later Johnson Controls), and Dematic Corporation. At Johnson Controls, he managed the engineering team for the pioneering hands-free telephone system and contributed to automotive connectivity innovations. He earned Project Management Professional (PMP) certification during his tenure at Dematic.
