Mark Jayes

Dr. Mark Jayes is a Research Fellow in Communication Disability at Manchester Metropolitan University's Faculty of Health and Education. He holds a PhD in Mental Capacity Assessment (University of Sheffield), MSc Clinical Research, MMedSci Clinical Communication Studies, and is HCPC-registered. With honorary positions at Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust and Leeds Beckett University, he leads research on communication disabilities, mental capacity law, and inclusive methodologies.

His research develops evidence-based tools like the Mental Capacity Assessment Support Toolkit (MCAST) and Consent Support Tool. Current NIHR-funded projects include validating communication screening tools for mental capacity assessments. Jayes supervises doctoral students on AAC training and refugee healthcare access. Awards include RCSLT Fellowship (2022) and Giving Voice Award (2021).

Publications focus on: 1) Decision-making accessibility for communication disabilities 2) Implementation of mental capacity legislation 3) Dysphagia management in resource-limited settings. Recent articles explore ethical challenges in clinical research consent pathways and person-centered aphasia care.
