About
Mark Gray is a Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Sunderland, specializing in synthetic chemistry, physical organic chemistry, and molecular modelling. He teaches modules on organic chemistry, thermodynamics, and rational drug design for the MPharm Pharmacy, BSc Biopharmaceutical Science, and MSc Drug Discovery and Development programs.
- Research Focus: Synthetic and bioorganic chemistry for antimicrobial drug discovery, rational drug design, and supramolecular systems. His work addresses challenges in antibiotic resistance through novel phosphonopeptide and natural product-based inhibitors.
- Scientific Contributions: 15+ publications spanning Journal of the American Chemical Society, Molecules, and Organic Letters, with recent emphasis on repurposing FDA-approved drugs and designing fluorogenic bacterial detection systems.
- Technical Expertise: Develops computational frameworks (AFCC) for automated drug design, explores noncovalent interactions in polymer self-assembly, and investigates enzyme inhibition mechanisms for pathogens.
