Mark Edwards

Professor Mark Edwards is a Professor of Neurology and Interface Disorders at King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN), affiliated with Maudsley Hospital and Kings College Hospital. He specializes in Movement Disorders and Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), with clinical and research expertise in neurophysiology and treatment development. He leads the Neural Control of Human Movement Research Group and co-founded Maudsley Neurotechnology, focusing on neurotechnology treatments for mental health. His work includes developing NHS-endorsed FND diagnostic pathways and pioneering specialist physiotherapy trials for functional motor disorders. He holds leadership roles in neurology societies and is a published author of over 300 peer-reviewed papers.

Education: PhD in dystonia pathophysiology at UCL Institute of Neurology under Professors John Rothwell and Kailash Bhatia. Previous roles include Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Neurologist at UCL and National Hospital for Neurology, where he developed NIHR-funded research and FND treatment services. Notable achievements include leading the NHS England FND exemplar pathway and directing the Physio4FMD RCT trial.

Research interests focus on FND mechanisms, neurophysiological dysfunction, and integrative treatments. His work bridges clinical practice and technology, emphasizing interdisciplinary neuropsychiatry and evidence-based neurotechnology. Recent projects include exploring psilocybin’s effects in FND and virtual reality applications for movement disorders.

Professional activities: President of the Association of British Neurology Movement Disorders Group, Executive Committee member of the International Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Society, Board Member of the Functional Neurological Disorder Society, and medical advisor to patient organizations like FNDHope.
