Dr. Mark M. Chambers is a Lecturer at Stony Brook University's Department of African American Studies within the College of Arts and Sciences. His academic work bridges Environmental History, African American history, and the history of science, technology, and medicine along racial lines. He teaches courses including Environmental History, African American history, and the history of science and technology.
Chambers earned his Ph.D. in Environmental History from Stony Brook University, focusing on cross-cultural exchanges of knowledge and technology in the middle Mississippi Valley from 1720 to 1840. His forthcoming book, Gray Gold: Lead Mining and Its Impact on the Natural and Cultural Environment, 1720 to 1840, explores these themes through a narrative lens combining scientific and cultural analysis.
His research interests intersect with Environmental Justice, particularly through the Environmental Data and Governance Initiative (EDGI), where he collaborates on accountability frameworks in environmental policy. Chambers is also actively involved in Stony Brook University's AIM/EOP program, teaching AFS 102: Themes in the Black Experience since 2009.
Chambers' recent publication in Environmental Justice (2021) titled "The Problem of Accountability" reflects his engagement with critical environmental governance studies.
