Dr. Mark Balnaves is an Adjunct Research Fellow at the University of Notre Dame Australia's School of Arts & Sciences, based at the Fremantle Campus. With a background in print and television journalism, he holds memberships in the International Federation of Journalists. His academic career includes professorial roles in communication and new media, and an overseas posting at the Gulf University of Science and Technology (GUST).
Dr. Balnaves has authored over 60 papers and book chapters, including notable publications such as Mobilising the Audience (2002), A New Theory of Information and the Internet (2011), and the best-selling Media Theories and Approaches: A Global Perspective (2008, upcoming second edition). His research focuses on how journalists and citizens engage with complex knowledge in the context of big data and digital economies.
He was honored as a World Thinker at the UAE's Festival of Thinkers in 2011, where he debated media issues. His work bridges journalism practice, media economics, and digital transformation.
