About
Professor Marjo van Koppen is a full professor of variation linguistics of Dutch at Utrecht University's Department of Languages, Literature and Communication within the Faculty of Humanities. She is affiliated with the Institute for Language Sciences (UiL-OTS) and leads the research group "Language structure: variation and change".
Her research focuses on Dutch linguistics, particularly diversity in Dutch syntax, examining Dutch dialects and historical stages of Dutch from a generative perspective. Key research areas include intra-author variation in the Dutch Golden Age, negation patterns, possessive structures, and microvariation in Dutch syntax. She has led major NWO-funded projects exploring language dynamics during the Dutch Golden Age, the grammar of transferable possession, and subject-predicate relations across languages.
Professor van Koppen has an extensive publication record with 79 research outputs and has presented her work at numerous international conferences. She serves on editorial boards for journals including Lingua (2011-2015) and Linguistic Variation Yearbook. Her work bridges theoretical linguistics, historical sociolinguistics, computational linguistics, and early modern literature.
She has organized multiple academic events including the Interframework Colloquium Utrecht, Morfologiedagen conference series, and workshops on DP-internal syntactic microvariation. Her research methodology combines qualitative case studies with computational approaches to analyze syntactic variation patterns.
