Marja Vierros

Marja Vierros is a Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Helsinki's Department of Languages, Faculty of Arts. She led the ERC-funded 'Digital Grammar of Greek Documentary Papyri' project (2018–2023) and previously worked on projects like SEMATIA and 'Act of the Scribe.' Her research focuses on linguistic variation in Ancient Greek/Latin, language contact, papyrology, digital classics, and scribal literacy in antiquity. She holds a PhD in Greek language and literature from the University of Helsinki (2011).

Her research portfolio includes groundbreaking work on digital tools for analyzing Greek papyri, such as PapyGreek Search and Treebanks. Notable contributions include studies on phonological variation, authorship identification via machine learning, and syntactic analysis of documentary texts. She has published widely in journals like Archiv für Papyrusforschung and Journal of Data Mining and Digital Humanities.

Her grants include an ERC Starting Grant and a Kone Foundation project (2024–2029). She serves on editorial boards for Arctos and organizes international conferences. Her work bridges classical philology with computational methods, advancing the study of ancient languages and texts.
