Dr. Mario Juruena is a Clinical Professor in Translational Psychiatry at King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, and a Consultant Psychiatrist at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM). His work focuses on Treatment-Resistant Disorders (depression, bipolar, personality disorders), Neuroendocrine biomarkers (HPA axis dysregulation), and translational research linking stress, early life trauma, and neuromodulation therapies.
Education: MD from Pontifical Catholic University (Brazil), Psychiatry Training at Saint Peter Hospital, MPhil in Psychobiology (Federal University of São Paulo), MSc in Affective Neuroscience (Maastricht University), and PhD in Treatment-Resistant Depression (University of London/KCL). Completed CBT training at Beck Institute.
Research interests include:
- HPA axis dysfunction in mood disorders
- Mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) biomarkers
- fMRI studies of depression/bipolar neural correlates
- Ketamine & neuromodulation therapies

Current projects include the PSY-PGx pharmacogenetics initiative, LQD depression trial, and the Psych-STRATA stratified psychiatry programme. He leads the Maudsley Advanced Treatment Service (MATS) for difficult-to-treat depression/bipolar disorders.
