Anthony Cleare

Anthony Cleare is a Professor of Psychopharmacology & Affective Disorders at King's College London and a consultant psychiatrist at the Maudsley Hospital. He leads the Affective Disorders Research Group at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) and co-directs the Centre for Affective Disorders. His primary research focuses on treatment-resistant depression, bipolar disorder, and the neurobiological mechanisms of mood disorders. Prof Cleare has over 380 peer-reviewed publications and contributed to national guidelines, including the British Association for Psychopharmacology's Depression Guidelines.

Education: BSc, MBBS (Guy’s Hospital Medical School), PhD (King's College London). Awards include the Laughlin Prize (Royal College of Psychiatrists), Sir Dennis Hill Prize, and Junior/Senior Clinical Psychopharmacology Awards from the British Association for Psychopharmacology.

Research Interests: Clinical psychopharmacology, neuroendocrinology, neuroimaging (PET/fMRI), chronic fatigue syndrome, and psychedelic therapies. His work emphasizes translational research, developing biomarkers, and optimizing clinical tools for mood disorders.

Notable Projects: LQD trial (lithium vs quetiapine augmentation), PAX-D trial (pramipexole in treatment-resistant depression), and probiotics as adjunctive depression treatment.
