Dr. Marie Mater is an Associate Professor of Speech Communication and Program Coordinator for the Speech Communication minor at Houston Christian University (HCU), part of the College of Arts and Humanities. She holds a PhD in Sociology from University College Cork-National University of Ireland, an MA in Rhetorical Studies from the University of Iowa, and a BA in Communication Studies & Political Science from Washburn University.

Research Interests: Dr. Mater focuses on communication education, communication theory, environmental discourse, and medical communication. Her work explores pedagogical strategies for intercultural and legal communication, as well as the role of public spheres in societal discourse. She has published and presented globally, including in China, India, the U.S., and Europe.

Advising & Grants: Dr. Mater served as Project Director for the Fulbright Outreach Lecturing Fund grants (2023–2024), hosting scholars from Japan and Peru. She has advised students entering law, medical, and graduate communication programs.
Leadership & Service: Active in university committees such as the Academic Assessment Review Committee and the QEP Committee, she also contributes to professional organizations like the International Communication Association.
